Virtually all pork produced In the United States and around the world are from fast growing pigs that typically mature in 5 to 6 months.  The commercially raised pigs are being pushed to mature to a butcher weight in just over 5 months and typically weigh 300 pounds.  The pigs that are raised commercially and most other small farm operations are fed a steady diet of lower protein feed that consists mainly GMO corn and soybeans.  Most of these hog operations have the pigs confined in small paddocks that are indoors.  They are packed in large grow houses that may contain over 5 thousand hogs.

Another method of raising pigs is where smaller scale pork producers tout that they offer pork from pasture raised pigs.  However, most of them utilize standard pig breeds that are as described above.  Although it is definitely better to have a pig live in an open environment and not confined, most are still fed a diet of corn/soy lower protein GMO feed.  These breeds of pigs will eat pasture vegetation, but at a very small amount – other than the farmer offering excess vegetables and fruits when available, it’s primarily the feed making up their diets.

The pigs on our farm are True Grazing Pigs!  This means up to 90% of their diet comes from our nutrient dense pastures during the grazing months and high-quality hay in the non-grazing months.  Our pigs are supplemented with very high quality and diverse feed that is milled on our farm that consists of non-gmo and organic grains that are locally sourced.
